Genealogy

The Loogootee Public Library maintains a comprehensive collection of resources to assist with genealogical research. Our holdings include books covering Indiana, Martin County, Loogootee, and neighboring communities. In addition, the library provides access to vital records such as death certificates, birth certificates, marriage licenses, cemetery records and census data.

Cemeteries

  • (Pink/Silver Perlite BINDER 7) St. Joseph and St. Rose Cemeteries
    • These records are in 3 different sections: St. Joseph Cemetery in Bramble, Indiana, Old St. Joseph Martin COunty located on the Crane Naval Base and St. Rose Cemetery Mt. Pleasant in Martin County
    • Table of Contents lists cemetery plat, lot owners, registration, unmarked graves, obituaries and an index
    • Old St. Joseph Cemetery begins on Page 156 including a plot map. Not in alphabetical order. Names listed are the deceased, date of death, age and a bit of family information. Numbers next to the individual names coincide with plot number location on the map. There are a few obituaries.
    • St. Rose does not include a map list similar information as the above plus a few obituaries are included.
  • (Pamphlet BINDER 9) Orange County Indiana Northwest Township Cemetery Records
    • Copied by Lost River DAR Chapter about 1945, reprinted 1987
    • Several small cemeteries are listed with information on the individuals interred including name, date of death, age and some family members. A location map is attached.
  • (Dark brown Supply Division 3-ring BINDER 11) Spice Valley and other Lawrence County Indiana Cemeteries
    • First three pages are a history of Strode’s Station in Clark County Indiana, a pioneer fort in Clark County built in 1779 by John Strode and Squire Boone’s Station, another pioneer fort built in 1781 by squire Boobe with a listing of the men stationed there now Shelbyville, Indiana
    • An information page on the Lawrence County Indiana Cemeteries follows
    • Dated 1975 by Nancy Baker of Shoals, Indiana. An index of townships precedes the information
    • Gravesites are listed by the various cemeteries in alphabetical order with the name, birth and death date and many with ages and military information
    • Some cemeteries have pictures and short histories. A section in the back lists deceased Lawrence County Indiana Veterans interred in Gilgal Cemetery in Pleasant Run Township with name, plot location and period of service. Many civil war service members are buried there. An index of Gilgal Cemetery follows
  • (Multicolored Perlite BINDER 12) Cemeteries of Martin County Indiana Vols 3 (1960–1987)
    • Compiled by Martin County Historical Society
    • Begins with an introduction about the how the task of locating and registering all graves began
    • 139 cemeteries are in Martin County according to the WPA in 1942
    • Index of cemeteries follows including a supplement
    • Name along with birth and death date and age
    • Supplements are included towards the back listing names of those who passed at the poor farm(reference dark blue folder #9) and Gold Star Honor Roll for the civil war April, 12 1861 – July, 1865
    • An additional supplement lists former Martin County residents buried out of the country. Names are in alphabetical order listing birth and death date and location
